National Results

The ASSET Survey ran from 19 January 2010 until 26 February 2010.

7093 academic and research staff employed in the science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) subject areas in 84 UK universities completed and submitted the online survey questionnaire.

The responses have been divided between those who are:

  • Academic Staff – defined here as Professor, Reader, Senior Researcher, Principal/Senior Lecturer, Lecturer
  • Post Docs – defined here as Junior Researcher, Post Doc

The actual percentages of respondents to each question are shown in plain text. Alongside each column of percentages is an additional one in bold, italic text which shows weighted distributions from the survey.  Each weighted column is indicated by (w).

Weights were applied to the raw data to compensate for non-response. The weights were calculated using the Higher Education Statistics Agency’s 2008/09 data for academic staff in the responding universities only.  The control totals used were university, gender and cost centre and a full explanation of the methodology is available at http://www2.napier.ac.uk/depts/fhls/peas/nonresponse.asp

A one-tailed z-test was used to test the weighted data for statistically significant differences between the sexes.

* indicates significant difference at the 5% level

** indicates significant difference at the 1% level

Totals may not sum to 100% due to rounding errors. N is not weighted.

The results are divided into ten sections:

  1. Respondent profile
  2. Differences in M/F progression and representation
  3. Appointment and promotion
  4. Career transition points, support and encouragement
  5. Career development provision
  6. Activities and factors which contribute to career success
  7. Respondents contributions to their departments and universities
  8. Department organisation and culture
  9. Flexibility and sustainable careers
  10. Interrupted careers, breaks and returning
