2010 Athena Survey of Science Engineering and Technology (ASSET)

Good Practice Guide for departments, faculties, and universities on using the results, and taking action on women’s career progression and representation in STEMM

INTRODUCTION

ASSET provides evidence of differences in the career progression, expectations and experiences of male and female scientists.

ASSET data identifies what individuals see as important for sustainable, successful and enjoyable careers.  It flags issues for departments to consider and raises awareness and understanding of female/male differences. It therefore helps to identify priorities for action and provides a baseline on which to measure future progress.

Department, faculty and university results are divided into ten sections:

  1. Respondent profile
  2. Differences in M/F progression and representation
  3. Appointment and promotion
  4. Career transition points, support and encouragement
  5. Career development provision
  6. Activities and factors which contribute to career success
  7. Respondents contributions to their departments and universities
  8. Department organisation and culture
  9. Flexibility and sustainable careers
  10. Interrupted careers, breaks and returning

Work by the Athena Project, Athena SWAN, the Institute of Physics (IOP) and Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and individual universities and departments, shows that bad practice incrementally prejudices women’s career progression, reduces their enjoyment of their science and influences their career choices. Good practice is not just about how many women there are in a department, it is about processes that are open, fair, flexible and transparent.  The good practices adopted by the ‘best’ STEMM departments benefit all.
The Guide

The guide’s ten sections replicate the fact sheets.  Each has an introduction which suggests points to look for and examples of good practice which have been taken from chemistry and physics departments who participated in Athena, RSC and IOP good practice programmes. You can view the guide on these pages or download this pdf version.
